How AI Models Can Alter Your Skills?

I grew up in a timescale when internet connection was confined to PCs, and PCs weren’t a commodity in Indian homes. This was the time when I was in school. Fast forward to my sophomore year at college — smartphones had forayed into the Indian market. Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong — among the slightly expensive models, Samsung was the first to introduce an affordable yet sleek, holistic phone, which back then cost ₹5,000.
In the next few years, smartphones weren’t a luxury show-off; they became bare essentials for survival. I found browsing easier when I owned a smartphone because earlier I had to turn on my desktop every time I had to browse something as trivial as “how to make a plain vanilla cake.” But that was it. Google’s search engine didn’t always resolve my doubts.
Say I had a query like “Are BJTs still in use?” — I had to browse through multiple pages to find the right answer. I had to search for online forums to know why I had gotten a particular syntax error. During the last few years, this arduous task has been laid to rest. LLMs manage to scour through files and provide you the correct answer.
There was a time when I had to write query emails, leave applications, and project summaries all by myself. I may have looked up suggestions, but in the end, it was me. At college, there were kids who would seek my help to pen down some of these options, and I thought I did a decent job.
2023 was the year I was introduced to ChatGPT, but only during the last few months have I taken to using it on a regular basis. I’ll tell you what — I lost the will to do write-ups. For example, “How should I write a follow-up email?” Hey, but there was a time when I would do it all by myself.
I pity the conditions of HR professionals who now have to find the right candidate with good writing skills because it currently appears AI Models are the only candidate with those types of skills. The point I’m trying to drive is: our basic writing skills are on the brink of extinction. It’s perhaps okay to seek the help of AI models for minor edits, but relying on machines solely doesn’t seem healthy.
